Hours of labor went in cleaning the cabinet. The New Advent loudspeakers I purchased recently in used form. I also have a pair of bookshelf Advent 3 speakers. I have a pair of the New Advent A4 loudspeakers that are all original working perfectly, but no schematic. I only learned of this after repairing the woofers, so maybe this is something to do if you have the woofers out for repair. I have read that the originals might suffer from poor quality and degrade performance. The next thing I will look into is replacing the capacitors in the cross-over networks. I repaired a pair of classic Bose speakers for a friend as well and with good result.

There are professional speaker repair options available as well. I located a repair kit on the Internet and now the speakers are good as new. The polyurethane light seals in my film cameras suffered this same disease as well as various earphone cushions and waterproofing coatings on pack bags.Īnyway, I would encourage owners of Advent or other vintage classics to repair them by replacing the foam surrounds on the woofers.

I moved this arrangement to a 'listening room' when I completed a 5.1 surround system for the TV using Definitive speakers.Ī few years ago, I noticed a scratchy sound from one of the speakers and on removal of the grills, I discovered that the foam surrounds had deteriorated. This Onkyo has a phono pre-amp so I can connect my vintage Pioneer turntable. Currently they are connected to an Onkyo TX-8522 acquired at a garage sale for $5. I have a pair of New Advent Loudspeakers that I purchased new about 40 years ago. I'm a Henry Kloss fan and the NLAs are fine speakers. The Advents make up for that small deficiency by their high end extension, good looks, and relatively smooth sound. The KLHs and my Dynacos certainly do better in the midrange(the KLHs a little better, Dyancos are midrange champs). The Advents are pretty well rounded and they do well on both the low and high end. The 23s really left me wanting for more high frequency performance and the Advents satisfy in that regard. I wish I had the 23s still to compare but I believe I would stick with the Advents. I would say it's a trade off and one must decide whether they want HF extension or warmth. They extend a bit further however they lack a little of the natural sound of the old KLHs. The Advents do what the KLH 17s and 23s cannot do at least to my ears. I could say they lack warmth however that may not be fair because I did solder in new Dayton precision caps and I push them with Denon power which leans towards high end definition.

They have a great sound, good clean full bass and the new fried eggs are not lacking much. New caps really let the tweeters open up. I highly recommend replacing the capacitors because mine were far out of spec in both sets. I found one pair and then I had to get another to stack them.
